ABS : Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. A plastic used to manufacture cards that are resistant to heat distortion.

Algorithm : A procedure or formula for solving a mathematical problem by dividing the problem into a clearly defined number of steps.

AM : Applications manager.
Antenna : Aerial. Usually a copper coil used in RFID cards.
Analog : A continuously variable representation of values. In contrast to digital signals, analog signals can assume any intermediate value.
ANSI : The American Standards Institute.
Anti-Collision : A general property in contactless card systems to prevent overlapping of different signals competing for attention.
Anti Photocopy Device : A method for preventing documents being counterfeited using a photocopier. This may be in the design incorporating special marks or in the construction of the document.
APDU : Application Protocol Data Unit.
API : Application Programming Interface.
Applet : A small sized application written in a high-level language eg.Java and run in the virtual machine of a computer. Sometimes referred to as ‘cardlet’.
Application : Data, commands, processes, mechanisms, algorithms and program code, inside a chip card used to operate it within the framework of a specific system.
Archives : Historical Records.

ATM : Asynchronous Transfer Mode. A dedicated connection switching technology for transmitting data over fiber optic cable.
ATM Card : A plastic card used to operate ATM machines.
ATR : Answer to Reset.
Authentication : The process by which a card, terminal or person proves its identity.
Authorisation Center : Computerised center responsible for approving payment made using a card.
